Örgryte and Djurgården haven’t shared a pitch in Allsvenskan since 2009. Let that sink in for a second. An entire generation of Swedish football has come and gone, and now, on a Monday night at Gamla Ullevi, these two old names are back in the same fixture list.
Örgryte arrive with the sort of momentum that changes how a whole city talks about a football club. Djurgården arrive with the sort of consistency that quietly builds a European campaign. Something has to give.
A derby win that changed everything
Let’s be honest, nobody outside Gothenburg was paying much attention to Örgryte a fortnight ago. Nine points from twelve games, stuck in the bottom three, looking every bit like a team whose main job this season is simply staying in the division they fought so hard to reach.
Then came the derby against Häcken. Four goals, three conceded, a game that swung one way and then the other before Andreas Holmberg’s side held on. It was Örgryte’s first league win since April 11. Ninety one days without one. That’s not a slump, that’s a drought.
Noah Christoffersson scored twice in that game and reminded everyone why he keeps getting mentioned whenever Örgryte need a spark in the box. The result won’t move them far up the table on its own, but it does something more valuable for a struggling side. It buys belief. Players who had forgotten what winning felt like suddenly remember.
Here’s the thing though. That win came at a cost. Tobias Sana, Örgryte’s creative engine, picked up his third yellow card of the season and is suspended. So is head coach Andreas Holmberg, also banned after collecting three cautions of his own, which means he won’t be pacing the technical area on Monday. Losing your main creator and your manager’s touchline presence in the same week is a rough trade for one derby victory.
Örgryte are also without Aydarus Abukar and Rasmus Alm, both still working their way back from knee injuries. On paper, the expected line up sees Hampus Gustafsson in goal behind a back three of Sebastian Lagerlund, Mikael Dyrestam and Christoffer Styffe, with Daniel Paulson and Owen Parker-Price asked to control the middle of the pitch. Up front, William Hofvander and Christoffersson will look to give the home crowd something to shout about again.
Djurgården quietly building a case for Europe
While Örgryte were fighting off relegation form, Djurgården have been going about their business with far less drama and far better results. Nineteen points from eleven matches has them sitting comfortably inside the top five, right where a club of their size expects to be when the season is on the line.
If recent weeks have taught us anything about this Djurgården side, it’s that they don’t need to be spectacular to be effective. They beat Häcken 4-2, then followed it up with a 3-0 win over Halmstad in which Bo Hegland was the standout, getting on the scoresheet twice. Two wins from two, seven goals scored, one conceded. That’s the kind of form clubs chasing continental football need to show at this stage of the year.
Head coach Jani Honkavaara has been careful not to get carried away by any of it. Asked about Örgryte this week, he pointed out that the table doesn’t tell the whole story, describing them as a technically capable side built around possession, and stressing that Djurgården need to be fully switched on if they want to take anything back to Stockholm. It’s the sort of respectful caution most coaches offer before a game like this, but in Djurgården’s case there’s substance behind it. Örgryte have shown, in patches, that they can play.
Djurgården won’t have everything at their disposal either. Mikael Marques, sent off against Häcken for a reckless challenge, had his suspension extended by the disciplinary board and misses this one too, on top of the automatic ban he already served against Halmstad. Leon Hien remains out injured, which leaves Jani Honkavaara a little light at centre back. Expect Jacob Rinne in goal, with Jacob Une Larsson and Miro Tenho stepping into central defence and Kristian Lien leading the line. Beyond those absences, the visiting squad looks in good health, which after a long domestic and continental season is not something every top five side can say in July.
Where this one gets interesting
At first glance, this looks like a straightforward mismatch between a team scrapping to stay up and a team pushing for Europe. You only have to watch Örgryte for twenty minutes, though, to notice they’re not simply making up the numbers. Their possession game is genuine, and that derby win showed a side capable of scoring in bunches when the game opens up.
That’s exactly the problem for Örgryte defensively. They’ve conceded more shots and more expected goals than anyone else in Allsvenskan this season, and games involving them have a habit of turning into shootouts rather than tight, cagey affairs. Against a Djurgården attack that’s been finding the net for fun on the road lately, averaging well over two expected goals a game away from home, that defensive fragility is the story most likely to decide this match.
Djurgården’s away form backs that up. Their last six league matches have all gone over two and a half goals, and it would be a surprise if this one bucked the trend. Örgryte have scored in every home game this season too, so a clean sheet for either side feels unlikely given how both teams have been trending.
There’s also the history angle worth remembering. This is only the second competitive meeting between these clubs since 2013, and the first in Allsvenskan since 2009. Gamla Ullevi should have a proper atmosphere for it, even with Örgryte sitting near the bottom of the table. Fans of both clubs know what these fixtures used to mean, and that counts for something even now.
Granit Maqedonci takes charge of the match and has averaged close to three cards a game this season, so expect a physical edge without it boiling over completely.
Prediction
Djurgården go into this as the stronger side on form, on the table and on the numbers, but Örgryte’s derby win and their tendency to be involved in high scoring games make a routine away win hard to back with real confidence.
