Right then, lads – Friday night football is here and the French season is kicking off. Let us get straight into it.

Marseille vs Strasbourg – Marseille to Win & Both Teams to Score

The big game of the night is at the Stade Velodrome, and Marseille are clear favorites at 1.73. Now, I know some of you might be wary because Marseille have had a turbulent summer – they missed out on Champions League football, Mason Greenwood has left for Fenerbahce, and Bruno Genesio is the new man in charge. But here is why I am still backing them. Marseille have never lost to Strasbourg in nine home Ligue 1 meetings at the Velodrome. Nine. That is a fortress. They have won six of their last seven matchday one fixtures, and their preseason form was decent – a 3-1 win over Athletic Club and a narrow 2-1 loss to Atletico Madrid where Igor Paixao looked dangerous.

Strasbourg, meanwhile, are in rough shape. They have lost three consecutive matches, failed to win any of their seven preseason friendlies, and got hammered 7-0 by Sporting in one of them. They have not kept a clean sheet in 13 straight matches, and they are missing key players like Joaquin Panichelli through injury and Eduard Sobol through suspension. Marseille’s defence is not watertight either – they will be without Aguerd and possibly Moumbagna – so Strasbourg should get a goal. But the home side have too much quality. Marseille to win at 1.73 is the play, and BTTS at 1.53 is a solid combo.

Nice vs Lorient – Lorient +0.5 Asian Handicap

This one at the Allianz Riviera is interesting. Nice survived relegation last season by the skin of their teeth, needing a playoff against Saint-Etienne to stay up. They have a new manager in Olivier Pantaloni, and while they have been solid in preseason, their home form last season was dreadful – they dropped points in seven of their last eight league home games and went eight matches without a win at home.

Lorient, on the other hand, finished 10th last season and have been in excellent preseason form, winning four of their six friendlies. They have a new manager in Alexandre Dujeux, and they are well-organised. The model I trust gives Lorient a 38 percent win probability and Nice just 35 percent, with the draw at 27 percent. That makes Lorient +0.5 at around 1.85 a cracking bet – you win if they draw or win. Nice have not won their Ligue 1 home opener since August 2020, and Lorient are unbeaten in their last three against Nice. I am on the away side with the half-goal start.

Toulouse vs Lyon – Lyon to Win

Toulouse host Lyon at the Stadium Municipal, and this is a tricky one to call. Toulouse won both meetings against Lyon last season, ending an 18-match winless run against them. But Lyon have had the advantage of Champions League qualifiers already, which means they are match-fit and sharp. They beat Sparta Prague and drew with Fenerbahce in Europe, and while their away form last season was patchy, they have the quality to get the job done.

Toulouse have kept just one clean sheet in their final 13 outings last season, and their defence looks vulnerable. Lyon have players like Openda, Fofana, and Tolisso who can hurt any side in this league. The odds have Lyon at around 2.46, which is value given their superior squad and match sharpness. I am backing Lyon to win, and if you fancy a correct score, 2-1 to Lyon at around 8.00 is a nice small-stakes play.

Lens vs Auxerre – Lens to Win

Lens host Auxerre at the Bollaert-Delelis, and this looks like a straightforward home win. Lens have been in excellent form, scoring in 16 consecutive league matches, and they have a 66 percent win probability according to the model. They won 72 percent of their home games last season and have an xG of 2.01 compared to Auxerre’s 0.86.

Auxerre have won their last three matches, but they are a mid-table side at best and lack the defensive fortitude to withstand Lens’ high press. The model predicts 2-0 or 1-0 as the most likely scorelines, and Lens to win at 1.60 is a solid banker for any accumulator. If you want a bit more value, Lens to win to nil at around 2.40 is worth considering given Auxerre’s struggles in front of goal.

Le Mans vs Brest – Under 2.5 Goals

Le Mans are back in Ligue 1 after promotion, and they host Brest at the Stade Marie-Marvingt. Brest had a solid season last year, finishing in the top half, but their away form was inconsistent. Le Mans have drawn three of their last six matches, and Brest have lost three of their last six. Both teams tend to be cautious in openers, and the head-to-head shows tight affairs.

The model predicts a 1-1 draw as the most likely outcome, and under 2.5 goals at around 1.75 looks smart. Le Mans will be nervous in their first game back at this level, and Brest will not want to get caught out early. Expect a low-scoring grind.

Champions at home on opening night against newly promoted opposition is about as strong a starting point as this section gets, and Arsenal have generally started seasons quickly under their current setup.

The gulf in squad quality between Al Nassr and most of the rest of the Saudi Pro League remains significant, and home advantage only adds to that.

Galatasaray vs Erzurumspor – Over 2.5 Goals (Confidence: 7/10)
Galatasaray have carried real attacking sharpness out of pre-season, and newly promoted sides visiting the bigger Turkish clubs have generally struggled to keep things tight in recent seasons.

Real Betis vs Real Sociedad – BTTS Yes (Confidence: 6/10)
Both sides have shown attacking intent in their build up to the season, and Betis at home rarely play for a clean sheet first and everything else second.

Tigres UANL vs Atlante – Tigres Win (Confidence: 6/10)
Tigres have the deeper, more experienced squad, and Atlante’s return to the top flight is still very much a work in progress even with the emotional lift of being back.

Cracovia Kraków vs Wieczysta Kraków – Home Win (Confidence: 6/10)
Local derbies can be unpredictable, but Cracovia’s greater top flight experience should tell across ninety minutes against a newly promoted city rival.
